A Career in Illustration, by Emma Dibben

Emma Dibben, at work in her Bristol Studio

Since graduating in 2004, Emma has worked as a freelance Illustrator based at Jamaica Street Studios, Bristol, for a wide range of clients including Waitrose Food Illustrated, The Guardian, Hodder&Stoughton, Penguin, The Saturday Times, Octopus, House&Garden, and Time Out.  Her work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and on book covers, greetings cards, ceramics, jam jars and a bottle of gin.

Here, Emma gives graduates some tips on making the transaction between studying and working.

“As soon as I finished my degree, I sent out heaps of mail outs with tear sheets and samples of my work to all sorts of different publications. I spent five days in London going to see as many publishers, magazines, and newspapers as possible. I started off with only about three appointments but gradually my week filled up until I had really bad blisters and very sore feet!”
